BAROKA PĒRLE
- The origin of the iridescent pearl is organic; it was formed inside a pearl oyster. The entry of a foreign body into the mussel irritates the cavity of its mantle and the animal releases calcium carbonate as well as its own secretions. The combination of these two components forms a pearl layer. It takes several years for a pearl to form inside the shell.
- There are both freshwater pearls, mainly cultivated in China, and saltwater pearls, cultivated in the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean off the coast of Australia, as well as in Japan, Fiji, Tahiti, and Indonesia.
- “Cultured” is the key word, since most pearls today are cultured. This means that a ball is placed in the mollusk to stimulate the secretion of pearls. Cultivated pearls are spherical, while natural pearls are more irregular in shape and very rare.
- The only way to tell if a pearl is natural is to examine it with an X-ray—in a cultured pearl, a small bead will be visible beneath the nacre layer.
- In healing, pearls possess a gentle energy that symbolizes the Moon and its influence on the body’s internal cycles.
